School visits
K-6 storytelling workshops
(virtual or in person)
I start each visit with a presentation on my career, what its like to be an author/cartoonist, and about the process of making graphic novels. this presentation is full of fun illustrations and is meant to teach students about the job of being an author - and hopefully inspire a few future cartoonists!
After the presentation, we start drawing! this can either be a 4-panel comic, or some environmental storytelling exercises with a character.
All workshops typically last 45minutes - 1hr
Character/environmental storytelling:
(best for shorter sessions)
Together, the students and I will create a character that I will draw live for them on either a screen or a large paper pad (we can work with whatever you have!) I love when students are able to follow along with this drawing in their own sketchbooks or on paper, pencils are all they need!
examples of questions I will ask the students during drawing time:
is our character from earth? are they human?
do they have a pet?
What is our characters job?
What can we put in their environment to help us learn more about them?
4-panel comics WORKSHOP
4 panel comics are a great first step into storytelling and comic making. Students will either follow along in their own books/on paper, or watch as we create one together and I draw out their ideas.
This exercise is great when learning about story structure, and learning about basic plot beats.
Panels consist of:
Introduce us to the character
show us what they want
How do they get what they want?
success! Let’s see our character getting what they want!
*I invite students of grades 4-6 to create their own comics, depending on time allotted.

grades 4-7 mini comics workshop (in-person only)
Mini comics (or zines!) are an incredible way to learn about comics & storytelling. This activity lets each student walk away with their very own comic, and the ability to create more in the future. With just printer paper, pencils, and pens, we can create some incredible stories together!
I will walk students step-by-step through the process of creating their mini comics. The stories they tell can be as simple as what their school day looks like, to an epic space battle with aliens!
Typically runs 1-1.5hrs, meant for older students
